Kentucky Equine Humane Center Recognized at Rolex
Boulder, Colo. Doing the right thing one horse at a time is so important to the Kentucky Equine Humane Center (http://www.kyehc.org), it’s the tag line to their logo.
It’s this total dedication and focus to each and every horse that comes through their door that brought the non-profit, Nicholasville, Kentucky-based rescue kudos as a rescue to be honored on April 25 during the Rolex Kentucky Three-Day event held at the Kentucky Horse Park.
For the center’s director, Karen Gustin, there is real satisfaction in turning a horse’s life around.
“The most rewarding part of being a rescue is taking a horse in that looks pitiful, who has been neglected almost to the point of no return,” Gustin said, “and loving it, caring for it, and sending it off happy and healthy to a new home.”
In addition to caring for nearly a dozen horses a year, Gustin does her best to educate the equine industry on horse-rescue issues.
“It would be great for more people to understand and support second careers for any horse,” she said. “There has been tremendous movement in this area; for example, the formation of the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for a similar organization to exist for many of the different breeds, and even one to focus on those horses whose lineage is not exactly known?”
To honor Gustin and the other volunteers at the Kentucky Equine Humane Center, the sponsors for A Home For Every Horse, including WeatherBeeta, Zoetis, Tractor Supply and Purina, recognized the rescue at the Horse Expo and presented them with some horse-care gifts to take back to the rescue, including a new WeatherBeeta blanket, dozens of tubes of Strongid paste and a $50 Tractor Supply Gift Card.
“A Home for Every Horse gives organizations like ours national exposure, which is great,” Gustin said of her center’s partnership with the organization. “You have an audience that we can tap into and that is very beneficial. And, of course, the support of in-kind donations such as feed is very much appreciated!”
