February’s Featured Rescue – Freedom and Whiskey
Freedom & Whiskey Equine Rescue began in 2014 with a miniature donkey named Rollo, one of more than a hundred mini donkeys saved from a boxcar headed to a Mexican slaughterhouse. At the time, the founders had two horses and a small farm in Loudoun County, Virginia—never expecting that this once-feral donkey would inspire a future nonprofit rescue.
What started with one mini donkey quickly grew. They took in a full-sized horse in need, then another, eventually relocating to a larger farm to accommodate more rescues. From 2014 to 2023, they self-funded the care of approximately eight horses, driven by a passion for providing a safe and loving sanctuary.
By 2022, after nearly a decade of rescuing horses on their own, they recognized the need to expand their impact. Their commitment to helping neglected, abandoned, and surrendered horses remained unwavering, but sustainable growth required community support. From this realization, Freedom & Whiskey Equine Rescue was born—a mission-driven organization dedicated to giving every horse a second chance.
