Set a vaccination appointment to help guard against all core diseases.

With spring approaching, now is the time to consider the best preparations you can take to help ensure health and high-quality performance for your horse. One key preventive health measure that is often overlooked is the need of every horse to be protected against the core equine diseases every spring. After all, every horse faces grave core disease dangers

“It has been shown that six out of seven horses are not protected against all core diseases,” said Jaci Boggs, DVM, senior technical services veterinarian with Zoetis. “And spring is fast approaching, when exposure to disease carriers like mosquitoes, wildlife and soil bacteria will be unavoidable. Every horse should receive core disease vaccination every spring – make an appointment with your veterinarian.”

Annual spring vaccination serves as a foundation of equine wellness. Vaccinating your horse every spring helps provide him with the protection he needs before the most threatening carriers of core diseases reach peak activity.

“All of the core diseases pose a real threat to the life and wellbeing of an exposed horse, and with rabies, family members, friends and any other persons exposed are also at risk of contracting rabies disease, which is always fatal once clinical signs appear,” said Dr. Boggs. “A horse’s owner can help defend against these devastating diseases through annual spring core disease vaccination.”

Core EQ Innovator is the first and only vaccine to contain all core equine disease antigens — in one injection — to protect against West Nile virus, Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis, tetanus and rabies. The vaccine, available from your veterinarian, is proven safe and was reaction-free in 99.7% of horses in field safety studies.

During your horse’s appointment, be sure to talk with your veterinarian about additional health factors, including:

  • Risk-based disease exposure: Your horse’s unique lifestyle might necessitate risk-based vaccinations such as equine influenza, equine herpesvirus, leptospirosis or strangles.
  • Travel and shows: If you plan to travel with your horse in the coming months, check your records to see whether it’s time for an updated Coggins test or health certificate.
  • Dental health: An annual dental exam, at minimum, is required to help maintain a horse’s healthy weight and optimum performance.

Call your veterinarian today to schedule your horse’s spring appointment and ask about Core EQ Innovator. Learn more at CoreEQInnovator.com.
